Common Phrases And What They Mean

Here’s a phrase that you will probably hear, any and all disputes arising are herein subject to arbitration.” What does this mean? Basically, if something terrible happens,  you will probably not be able to file a lawsuit. In other words, be careful!

This is another phrase you will probably see on your contract, “this decision should be governed and construed in all respects in accordance with the law in the state of Florida.” This means that if you sign,  you are agreeing to comply with contract law as opposed to maritime law.

If you hire a maritime attorney, they can help better ensure that you completely understand your contract and help ensure that you sign a contract you want to sign.

How To Read Like A Maritime Law Attorney

The reason why a maritime attorney reads contracts so well is that we studied law for many years in school before practicing law! It’s okay if reading law contracts is hard for you; it was hard for us when we first started.

There are different words you might read in a contract; for example, if you read a contract and it says “any dispute of whatsoever nature must be brought, if it all, within one year of causing the action arising, it probably sounds like French to you. What this means is if you decide to pursue a lawsuit, it must happen within a specific time period.

Obviously, this is important because if you do not pursue a lawsuit within an appropriate amount of time, you will no longer be able to pursue one.

Still Questioning If You Should Hire An Attorney

At Irwin Law Firm, we completely understand that you may not want to spend money on an attorney for your maritime troubles. Still, utilizing a maritime attorney can help guarantee that you know what happens within your contracts and during your cases. We want to give you the best chance possible.
